The Vagina Demystified

If you have ever been worried that having too much sex or a well-endowed partner may cause size changes to your vagina, put those fears to bed (so to speak). Turns out the vagina is a very resilient part of the body that literally “bounces back” to its pre-activity size quite efficiently.

Does Too Much Sex Stretch The Vagina?

Vaginas are designed to be elastic and, in a position, to expand large enough for any penis size and especially childbirth. There are a number of relatively magical changes that take place in a female’s vagina during arousal and sexual activity.

The vagina is a very “elastic” organ, says Christine O’Connor, MD, director of adolescent gynecology and well women care at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. It is small enough to hold a tampon in place but can expand enough to pass a child through. This is because the walls of the genitals are similar to those of the stomach, they have rugae, meaning they fold together to break down when unused, then expand when necessary.

“It doesn’t stay one particular size,” O’Connor says. “It changes to accommodate whatever is going on at that time.”

The most commonly used measurements about the size of vaginas are derived from Masters and Johnson’s work from the 1960s. They will have looked at 100 women who had never recently been pregnant and located that vagina lengths, unstimulated, range from 2.75 ins to about 3.25 inches. When a female is aroused, it increased to 4.25 ins to 4.75 inches wide. Regardless of how long the genitals is, the area that is considered to be important for most women’s sexual response is the outer a third.

What Happens To Vaginal During Arousal.

During arousal, blood circulation is increased to the vaginal area that provides lubrication to the rugae, the “bumpy” textured internal walls of the genitals. The rugae start to relax, which unfolds them and creates space for accommodating your lover’s penile regardless of his size.

“Even the largest penis in the world won’t compare to the size of the baby so it won’t affect the size of the vagina,” said Lauren Streicher, M.D., associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and author of Love Sex Again.

Don’t forget your Kegels

Rest assured, it is correctly natural not to feel as tight-as-usual immediately after sexual intercourse because your vagina was stretched to accommodate your partner. However, it will return to its pre-intercourse tightness within a few hours.

When it comes to a woman’s “tightness” it is usually not the vagina that is the problem. It is actually the pelvic floor muscles that form a figure-eight girdle around the vaginal/pelvic area that affects tightness most of all. The Kegel exercises are very effective when frequently practiced throughout the day on a regular basis. There are also other exercises that can be done to specifically target the muscles of the pelvic floor.

“Just like working out any other muscle like your triceps, it takes time for noticeable results,” says Dr. Ava Cadell, sex therapist, and founder of LoveologyUniversity.com. “You should feel tighter in a couple of months but keep on doing them for the rest of your life to stay sexually healthy.”

Do Vagina-Tightening Creams Really Work?

Vaginas come in a range of shapes, sizes, and colors, and one variety isn’t better than any other. They’re all attractive freaking amazing, and they can do some amazing stuff! However, if–for whatever reason–you find yourself dreaming things were a little tighter down there, you might be wanting to know if there’s anything you can do beyond Kegel exercises to help.

For most people, a loose vagina results in low interest in sex and the intercourse might become uninteresting for the partner. A woman with a loose vagina will start experiencing emotional turmoil. What’s going on in a woman’s mind is the fact that if the partner is not getting satisfied in bed, the partner might seek sexual satisfaction elsewhere. However, before you dive into a deep sea of worry, you should consider other solutions such as vaginal tightening creams.
